How A Chairlift Can Make Your Upper Floors More Accessible

by Ricardo Hart

There are many instances when living in a home that has multiple levels can be difficult. For people with challenges that make it hard or even impossible to navigate a set of stairs, installing a chairlift system can eliminate the need to climb the stairs and restore some freedom of movement for these people.

The Right Lift

Installing a stairlift system in your home is a good option if you struggle with climbing stairs. The system is not complicated to use, and many different styles can be installed for you.

Wheelchair lifts are an excellent option for people that still have some mobility, or you could use a system with a wheelchair platform if you spend most of the time in a wheelchair and still want to get up and down the stairs. Most stairlift manufacturers offer systems that will accommodate many different situations, so working with a stairlift installer to find the right lift and have it professionally installed in your home is an excellent place to start.

Curved Stairs And Lifts

Having a set of stairs that turns or curves as it rises to the next floor does not mean you can't have use stairlifts in your home. Most modern stairlift manufacturers make sections of tracks that the installer can place along curved walls to follow the stairs as they turn. The benefit to this is that the lift still stays close to the wall but is not limited to straight stair flights.

The stairlift installer will measure the curve of the staircase and then order the right track sections to build a custom track that will fit your stairs. The lift manufacturer can recommend additional parts that may need to be used to make the turn smoothly, and together, the manufacturer and the installer can create a lift system that will work in most homes.

Accessories And Add-Ons

When you have a stairlift system installed in your home, ask about the available accessories for your model. For example, you may find things like a remote key fob to operate the lift, larger chairs for more comfort, or additional space or platforms that allow you to put something on them to take up the stairs with you.

While stairlifts have been around for many years, they are becoming more flexible and easier to use than ever before. If you are unsure about a lift for your home, get an in-home estimate from a dealer, and they can show you different models and options that will work for your situation and your stairs.
